Summer is fast approaching, and that means one thing. Soon, tourists from across France and the world will flock to the French Riviera for a season of sea, sand and sun.
The French Riviera, located in France’s southeast, is a magnet for visitors. The coastline is marked by unique towns and villages and some of the best beaches in Europe. Some come here to party up a storm in chic coastal clubs, others for a quiet, cultured escape, but no matter what draws you to the French Riviera, our list has something for you.
This month on the Paris Teacher’s Club blog, we shortlist the seven best French Riviera vacation hotspots.
Nestled between the French Riviera vacation magnets of Cannes and Nice, you’ll find Antibes, which rivals its more famous neighbours in its sheer beauty. Antibes is an ancient walled city, with so much to discover around each and every corner of its historic streets.
The town has many draws for those looking to experience the best of the Côte D’Azur without the crowds of nearby Nice. Its population is smaller, and its compact layout means that you can flit between the fascinating streets of the Old Town and the sandy beaches of Antibes with ease. Le Fort Carré towers over the town, and there’s many local activities to keep you busy. Don’t miss a visit to the Picasso Museum, or to the bustling local market.
You may not know of it by name, but Èze is one of the highlights of the French Riviera, and one that has somehow remained a best-kept secret from the well-worn tourist trail. The hilltop town overlooking the Côte d’Azur is a step back in time, home to medieval cobblestone streets, awe-inspiring views, historic chateaux and of course, turquoise Mediterranean beaches.
Life just seems easier in Èze, which is tiny in comparison to the bustling cities of the French Riviera but still less than 10km from Nice, and just a few minutes drive from Monaco. This enchanting village was also once a favourite hangout for one Walt Disney. We can’t help but wonder whether he based some of his fairytale settings on Èze!
Menton shines as a French Riviera destination for so many reasons, but it’s the city’s eclectic and aesthetically pleasing appearance that is what makes Menton such a popular – and photogenic – location. We are simply mad about Menton, one of the most beautiful towns on the Mediterranean and rightfully nicknamed “The Pearl of France”.
Menton is a colourful hodgepodge of historic pastel buildings; a magnificent backdrop for swaying palms, white sand beaches and emerald ocean waters. Menton has something for everyone – a beautiful Old Town, chic restaurants, green public gardens, great shopping and fascinating museums, like the The Musée Jean Cocteau. Down here near the Italian border, you’ll experience the best of the Côte d’Azur.
Arguably the most famous French Riviera vacation destination, Nice is as nice as it’s name sounds. Despite being pronounced differently, like “niece”. Nice is jam-packed during the summer months with holiday goers eager to experience the riviera’s crown jewel. This French city was historically known as a playground for the rich and famous, but it’s also the perfect getaway for any style of traveller – singles, couples and families alike.
Aside from its picturesque seafront and famous promenade, the city serves up many other happy surprises. Stroll through the beautiful Old Town, stop off at historic cathedrals, pay a visit to fascinating museums and indulge at classic French restaurants serving up fresh Mediterranean fare. And don’t miss the views from the top of Castle Hill!
Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is one of the most luxurious French Riviera vacation destinations, and it’s worth splashing out for a stay in this sunny locale is you’re eager to escape the often-oppressive crowds of other nearby summer locales.
“Cap Ferrat” as it’s simply known, is famous for its luxury villas and mansions, and real estate here is some of the most exclusive in the world. The town is relatively small, with the permanent population just over 1000. On top of treating themselves at the many upmarket accommodations in town, visitors can enjoy a trip to the Villa Ephrussi, a historic palace surrounded by acres and acres of lush gardens. And of course, the ocean in Cap Ferrat is some of the best in the region. Expect beaches fringed by palms and crystal clear, warm Mediterranean waters, plus lots of coastal walks with amazing views.
The French Riviera is dotted by islands easily accessible from the mainland, and Porquerolles is one of our favourites. A little further south down the coast from our other list selections, you simply can’t miss a day trip to this tiny yet unforgettable Mediterranean island.
A ten minute ferry ride from the town of Hyères, Porquerolles is only 7km wide and 3km long, but you’ll be surprised by how much there is to see and do here. The island is dotted by pretty seaside villages, ancient fortresses, eclectic art galleries, charming local restaurants and rolling vineyards. If you love the outdoors, the island is teeming with unique flora and fauna. If you’re heading here for a summer escape, you’re in for a treat. Some of the most incredible beaches in all of France can be found in Porquerolles, as well as some of the best views on the French Riviera.
Wrapping up our list is the glitzy, long-coveted St Tropez. Famous faces have flocked to this warm and exciting French Riviera vacation destination for decades, drawn by the town’s exceptional beaches and exciting entertainment offerings. In summer, the marina is packed with luxury yachts, but even if you’re not a member of the upper crust, St Tropez is always a welcoming and fun location to explore.
During summer, the small population of St Tropez swells to many times its size, and as a result, the town is packed with accommodation options to suit all budgets. Aside from world renowned beaches, you’ll enjoy a host of activities here. Unwind in cool cocktail bars, dine on locally sourced meals, shop up a storm, visit museums and galleries or explore the colourful Old Town on foot.
